Then I really wonder what is going on...  Could it be that my frontends
are laptops with lower resolution on the screen than the backend?   I
tried running the frontend from command line on my laptop, when I turn
CC on and off in playback (with the captions not successfully showing)
nothing at all is written to the terminal.  I was hoping to at least get
some debugging info...
