I have a (rough) but functioning patch installed on my own 0.20 system.
The project stalled because they were going to be replacing the entire
music metadata system (external libraries that they use to get music
file metadata) for 0.21.  I haven't gotten around to upgrading to 0.21
yet, but when I do I was planning on continuing the work.  The first
necessary part of the project is adding software amplification support
to the audio output classes; this was done almost two years ago (and
attached to a ticket that was created for it), but has yet to be
integrated into the code.

I'm hoping to have a little free time to work on this over this
summer...
