1) Last time I looked, the kernel had to be built with a
particular set of options, there were several incompatible
API versions, and I didn't want to add another configure +
compile + run time dependency.

The situation may be better now, but backwards compatibility
will always be an issue.


2) None of my Linux boxes have libudev, or DBus/HAL,
so I'm not personally keen to go in that direction.
