Hmm.  That seemed promising, but, alas, I don't think it is the 
problem.  I tried using the two default OSD themes on my frontends still 
no luck.  I then installed the same OSD theme that I use on the joint 
backend/frontend box that works, still no lock.  That has a 
HandelGotD.ttf file in the directory. 

Any other suggestions?

Can anyone actually confirm that closed captions successfully show up 
(or don't) on remote frontends  on .21-fixes?  How about someone using 
mythbuntu?
