[mythtv] Mythbackend Fails to start with --generate-preview error

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a singular anomaly or a real bug?
I upgraded from SVN 16279 to 16399, and recently to 16479. The latter
two both fail on 'service mythbackend restart' with a reported error
like "--generate-preview requires --chanid and --starttime or --infile"
I had never seen that before and did not know mythbackend even had those
command line parameters. Unfortunately, I am trying to start the daemon
backend, not spawn the preview thread ( at least, I *think* that is what
is supposed to happen, from a quick glance at the source code). I
checked for errant pid files etc. too...and even a re-boot..
I have tried removing ALL myth* binaries, and all libmyth* libraries
(plus 'rm -rf /usr/local/lib/mythtv) and even nuked the include and
share entries, before ./configure, make && make install of the newer
versions...NO JOY.
Does anyone have a clue as to why these recent builds FAIL this way?
I thought it might be database related, but copying back the 16279
version got me up and running without any database changes.
And the configure I am using is the one that built 16279 (I think...but
I cannot see anything dangerous in it, nor can I imagine what could be).
A thread search shows that danielk fixed #4370 in 15727 and cpinkham
fixed 4482 in 15580. Nothing else pops up as referencing
'generate-preview' recently.
