Yes, and I could see the something similar being done in other places.

That's the main reason I've been replying to this thread. :)  I've been
tempted a couple times over the past year to back-port it to a separate
0.20 branch just because of the power it gives users, but now that 0.21
is in the foreseeable future I'll spend what little dev time I have on
other things.
