Requiring that everything be shoehorned into one SG is too rigid.  
However, you do have the option to lay it out that way if you wish.  
Earlier in the thread Anduin mentioned how he doesn't allow some  
clients to write to his video share so there's at least one good  
argument for separate storage groups.

Because of the way the video DB is currently constructed it's  
possible to have clashes when switching to storage groups and  
relative paths so to be on the safe side we're going to create one  
storage group for each entry in the VideoStartupDir setting.

But, if you have multiple entries in VideoStartupDir and you know  
none of the contained videos clash then before upgrading mythvideo  
you can create a storage group with all those dirs and the DB convert  
will notice that and use your storage group.

In other words: if your covers are in /myth/covers and your videos  
are in "/disk1/videos:/disk2/videos" then create one SG containing  
all those directories and the convert will bring things up the way  
you want.
