I take it that wrt this patch we are talking about the passthru device, 
I have tried ALSA:spdif and don't get any sound when I set it to 5.1 
channels, I am running trunk and my amplifier is connected via optical 
cable. Can anyone suggest what a good output device might be.
It works fine with 2 channels using ALSA:iec958 and fine with ALSA:spdif 
with 2 channels.
