If checking in mythcontrol to see what button is configure and how is
not possible, I see it as a problem too.
Being able to configure a new remote simply by pressing a button on it

Possibly, but each developer have is own priority, beside as plugin will
have to be rewrite for the new UI, it is the perfect timing ...

why not ? :) User friendliness is what it is all about, you can have a
great software but with a user friendly way of configuring it, is would
stay "just" a great software.
