The discussion drifted away from your athlon-xp. The only worthwhile 
alternative for an athlon-xp are --cpu=athlon-xp or --cpu=pentium3. You 
could try pentium4 but I would bet that is slower than both former 
options. I don't expect the differences to big huge if you can measure 
them at all.
Most of the performance critical code in libavcodec is assembler and 
uses runtime cpu detection.

That is proably too much if you're already using optimized code. You 
could try to disable the in loop deblocking filter.
