[mythtv] error from mythfilldatabase

what have i done to get this error message from mythfilldatabase:

QMYSQL3: Unable to execute query
Database error was:
Illegal mix of collations (latin1_swedish_ci,IMPLICIT) and

have i configured wrongly:

- my box
- mythtv
- mysql
