releases are quite far apart *and* the response to a lot of bug reports is 
"fixed in svn"

would it be worth considering providing a small program which printed out the 
important details about a system:

os, sw versions, major configuration settings

perhaps in some shorthand way. which would have to be appended to a bug report 
to be considered. it might make your life less stressful in the long run.
