Are you running out of 0.19-fixes or SVN head?
what you need to do is cut the 1st 20MB of the stream and run
mythtranscode on that as:
mythtranscode -in small.mpg -o tmp.mpg --mpeg2

If that causes the same failure, I'll need you to provide me with that snippet.
If it doesn't take larger and larger blocks until it does.
