[mythtv] Automating update of media database table

Is there a way to update the media table (videometadata) outside of the
MythTV GUI?

It would be very helpful to be able to schedule/cron a database update, so
that there was not a need to go into Setup/Utilities and "Video Manager"
everytime a video is added to the media filesystem.

My apologies in advance if this is not quite "dev", I tried mythtv-users
first but did not find a solution.
