This is bad advice. I've added a warning to the official docs sgml.
This will percolate to the official docs when 0.19 is released.

Any advice you get from #mythtv-users may be incorrect. If you want
some shielding from bad advice consult the HOWTO on
  http://www.mythtv.org

Any advice you get from any source may be incorrect, but I think you
are being a bit hasty in blaming developer ego's for bad advice you
get from some random user on #mythtv-users. If the bad advice was in
the HOWTO on http://www.mythtv.org for a released version of MythTV
by all means heap scorn, or better yet provide a fix for the HOWTO.
