[mythtv] Automatic zoom to remove black borders for dvb

Hi all,

I was just wondering if there are any plans to incorporate functionality to
automatically select zoom mode based on the displayed content.
I found some posts about this from 2003, but as I cannot find any such
feature in mythtv I assume that it wasn't implemented. Has this been
discussed since then?

I use dvb in australia on a 4:3 tv, and the display usually has black
borders at the top and the bottom of the screen, but sometimes also on the
left and right, depending on whether the content is broadcast in widescreen
or not. It would be nice to have a feature which automatically selects zoom
mode to at least get rid of the left and right black borders.

Am I right in assuming that implementing this feature would involve some
image processing to decide whether a black border is present or not? Or is
there meta data in the broadcast signal which provides the necessary
information?

If there are no such plans to implement this and no one is working on it,
I'd be happy to dive in myself. I spend 8 hours a day programming c++
anyway, so why not 10... :-)

Regards
Dennis Tell
