The problem wasn't it defaulting to yes with a c3... the problem was it was 
forcing no for anything other than c3. and there was no way to explicitly 
enable the option.

Yes, it would be simple to change the configure script to autodetect the 
presence of VLD hardware... but that isn't desirable either if it also forces 
no if it's not detected, since you may be building on a non VLD machine. 

I thought the behaviour of compiling in vld support if the library was 
installed and defaulting it to off in the settings was correct. Not sure why 
that wasn't acceptable.

Otherwise I'd say leave it alone for now.
