Well, I also have one of those ATI remote thingy's, so yes I have some 
interest.  However, I suspect that there is a way to do this in a 
slightly different and neater way?  Perhaps something more like a LIRC 
daemon which converts back into the input layer?

However, it would be interesting to see if it wasn't possible to abstrct 
the input layer further?  I still have dreams of building a Palm powered 
remote control, possibly via a web based remote control.  It would be 
rather useful to have a kind of abstracted "Status" component which 
allows external devices to find out current state of the system and 
hence send commands in context
