I'll look at this tomorrow morning. In testing I probably changed
the channel on a 0% signal before this problem arose, it looks like
the NVP timed out, which is a condition I probably didn't test very
well since it takes like 20 seconds to time out.

I didn't find anything really strange on first look. But, I'll line up
the frontend and backend logs' timestamps to figure out exactly when
things went awry.

Does the backend really coredump or just stop responding?

If it core-dumps a backtrace would be very useful.
