Could this part not go in please? I personally like having the 
countdown available to me and it's not very hard to install a log 
rotation package especially with hup signal handler that went in 
recently.

A good change in this area would be to have the preshutdown script 
called *before* the shutdown announcement is made. My script checks for 
transcode and commercial flag jobs and keeps the machine up while 
they're active so my log is filling up with endless "I'm about to shut 
down / whoops, no I'm not" messages.
