It's not there in the mythtv keys documentation... Where is this
documented?

So what is EDTV then? All the definitions of EDTV I have read say it is
480p, though there is the 640 wide EDTV (4:3) and the 720 wide (widescreen)

Anyway, they are letterboxing it. As I noted, stations seem to be taking
the philosophy that they always run in exactly the same mode. If they
are 480i, they are always 480i. If they are 1080i, they are always that
way, regardless of content. At least in this town -- is it different
anywhere else?

No, they are upconverting. PBS digital puts two different logos in front
of their programs "Widescreen" and "Widescreen HD". This week's Nova is
just "Widescreen" but they deliver it at 1080i. However, it's clear that
it is upsampled, it's at EDTV sharpness, not 1080i sharpness. Trust me.

Whether PBS or KQED is the one who is doing this, I don't know, but it
is definitely being done. Along with the 3 audio streams, at least one of
which is silent.
