If you read the example Johannes gave you'll notice that the comment says 
discard, he's just emptying the event queue in the kernel. The event queue
only has room for a certain (low) number of events, which will be discarded
if it's overflowing. Since the events have no timestamp you have no idea if
the event was generated before or after you set the frontend.
