I am also writing to chime in on this issue. I was monitoring the thread 
to see if a resolution came out of it.

In my case, this is a problem for viewing HDTV files. I'm using an 
NVIDIA care with XVMC. The problem shows up anytime the OSD shows up. 
This is mainly during skipping, but even if I just hit 'i' for info the 
OSD comes up and a few seconds later when it tries to fade away it locks up.

The other interesting part of my setup is that I'm running separate 
backend/frontends (so HD files are streamed) and I'm also running 
diskless (NFS root) off the same server. However I don't think it is a 
bandwidth problem since I can play the files fine as long as the OSD 
doesn't come up.

To check if it is a memory issue I upgraded the memory in the box to 768 
  MB, but there was no effect.
