I agree.  It would be so easy to reformat this code to do so as well

David, I'm a bit tied up here.  Have guests to stay this week, kitchen 
being rebuilt and a load of other things.  But if you can wait until the 
weekend, then I will reformat what you have got here and fold it all 
into the AudioOutput class.  However, you have done the tricky part of 
working out how to control volume using Alsa, which is terrific!  Congrats.
