Good question, but I don't know the answer. Unfortunately, although I
also have a 4:3 TV, I do not have any widescreen videos to test.
So, were you able to determine whether it works? If not, please let the
list know--so your patch doesn't get skipped because of my post ;), and
if so, I'd still be interested to know how it worked for you.
