I personally like the 5 seconds and find this a great way of having the
LCD operate. Also when you change from item to item you get another 5
seconds to read the new item selected.

Its usually only one line at a time, so whats the issue for you, 5
seconds to read one line seems perfectly okay to me ?

If you really want to have the display time extended can I suggest that
you add something to the setup to make it configurable instead.
