I have now tried both ALSA and OSS, and they behave pretty similarly. Both
start out playing the clip back just fine for a second, then OSS goes into
constant audio stutter w/slow-motion video, while ALSA goes silent for the
most part w/slow-motion video, and occasional blips of audio.

Okay, wtf, just tried something at work I swear I tried already, and now I've
got smooth 720p audio and video playback. Prior to this, I was using a build
w/o any ALSA support on my work machine (since the machine only has OSS
drivers installed), but I just rebuilt against alsa-lib-devel 1.0.4 (from
kde-redhat), and now things are happy (though still using only OSS for
output). The key setting this time around seems to be enabling extra audio
buffering, which I'm pretty damned certain I've tried several times, both at
work and at home... I guess I've got a few more things to try out when I get
home... I'm going to be bald before I turn 30 at this rate... ;-)

I have no problems w/skipping around or OSD fade. What's your cpu utilization
like? Maybe skipping and OSD fades are pushing it to the brink?
