Oh, well lets not put in a feature to let it know that you have watched
the show or not then! That won't be at all useful to implement stuff
like having user groups where you can see how many people have watched
the show, or optimising the delete architecture so that it prefers to
expire programs that you have watched rather than the ones that you
haven't, or a bunch of other stuff

In fact why not take out all the useful logic then to make it do
sensible stuff at all? What are you after here?

When the show is expired automatically without you ever having watched
it, what do you want the software to do. There are only two options
here: Mark it that you have watched it, and never record it ever again,
or let it be re-recorded again in the future. Personally I would prefer
the latter because for me it happens when I set a series to record, but
don't let the unwatched episodes run up too high. However, they repeat
stuff like Friends endlessly and its nice to only catch the unwatched
ones on the repeat.

So you hate software reading your mind, but don't you hate it more when
the computer does something "dumb"? Don't you just prefer it to "do
what you expect"?
