It turns out, you can have events attached to the root of a submenu -- 
I took that out because I thought it wouldn't work.  In my patch below, 
choosing "Adjust Time Stretch" brings up the slider; if you want one of 
the defaults instead, press the right arrow to get the submenu.  This 
allows the current functionality to be completely unchanged.

You wouldn't be able to navigate both the submenus and the slider in 
that case.

That's an interesting idea; the timestretch and ff/rew could jump to 
1x, the volume could jump to the default setting, picture adjustments 
could jump to central values... that'd be a great feature to add.  I'm 
not sure what button to use, but I definitely like the idea.
