I'll submit a patch when I have 5 minutes, probably sometime Saturday. 
Or you can just separate the declaration and assignment of 'ret' to make 
gcc 2.95 happy.

-Doug, who thinks perhaps people shouldn't be running CVS if they lack 
the C/C++ skill to fix simple issues like this.
