This is only true if you have a standard analog 'frame-grabber' card and
use software to do the encoding. You also have the option of using a
tuner hard that encodes in hardware directly to MPEG-2, such as the
Hauppauge PVR-250, PVR-350 or AverMedia M-179.
So, if you want to build a lightweight frontend using embedded hardware
with hardware-assisted MPEG-2 decoding, the best thing to do would be
to set up a backend that can encode directly to MPEG-2 using a hardware
encoder.
