Overheard in a TV station conference room:

Exec 1: So HDTV's 16:9 format has 33% more screen area than a 4:3 format?

Exec 2: Yes.

Exec 1: So if we continue to broadcast 4:3 shows on a 16:9 signal, we
could place ads on the additional screen area throughout the entire
show. Instead of selling 13 minutes of ads per 30 minute show, we could
sell 30 minutes of ads...

Exec 2: But the studios are starting to record shows in 16:9 format...

Exec 1: Yeah, but I recently heard of this technology called "pan and
scan." We could use it to cut out the excess part of the widescreen
image leaving a nice 4:3 image...
