There are other things that can go wrong if it's not mounted properly.  
I was convinced mine was somehow damaged, I went so far to stick mine in 
my wife's windows box to update it's bios.  While it can be confusing, 
the proper response IMO is to help them treat the problem, not mask the 
symptoms.
