i haven't been able to reproduce this, inspite of repeated attempts. if
anybody else sees this, i will be very interested in hearing it.

also, i was planning the change the thumbnail loading a bit. right now the
thumbnail loader thread both caches and loads the thumbnails. i want to
change it so that it only caches thumbnails and the gui thread loads the
thumbnails. so with a slight blocking penalty, users will get a perception
of fast thumbnail loading.
