Hi again, Got it working, can tell you how, but I don't understand why. Basically I changed to alsa, but it continued to segfault. Then I stumbled upon some discussion of the dxs_support option in the modules.conf. The howto I had followed set it to 3. However when I set it to 2 it worked. options snd-via82xx index=0 dxs_support=2 Cheers Carey
