This worked for me as well. I'm glad you discovered this, because I
started fresh with a new box and the latest kernel and was really beginning
to scratch my head.

Compiled on Feb 18 2004 for kernel 2.6.1.
VIA VT82xx driver
# mythbackend --version
0.13.12102003-1
So anyway, no more errors about being unable to open /dev/dsp, but I still
have some sound troubleshooting to do (I don't hear anything when watching
live TV).
