Kevin, I think what you want to do is try out the "<" and
">" keys for for variable speed continuous fast forward. The
right arrow key is intended to be the 30 second skip that
you seek (pun intended). The skip forward amount and skip
back amount can be set independently. I think you will have
what you want by turning off sticky keys and using "<"/">"
for FF/Rew and "<-"/"->" for skipping. This leaves PgUp and
PgDown for large jumps of several minutes as they should be.
I don't think everyone else should have more setup options to
wade through as a result of your initial impression. If the
default keys don't seem natural to you, you may want to try
setting your key binding in mythweb Settings->Key Bindings
to put your FF/Rew and skip keys where you'd like.

Also, there are lots of seek related things to discover. Check
out "U" and "J" for smooth fast motion and variable speed
slo-mo. You can now type in a number and hit right or left to
skip that number of minutes. In 'edit mode' ("E" or "M") there
is a nifty method for navigation using the arrow keys to
change increments.
