Or not so subtle ;-). MythTV has lots of active threads grabbing,
encoding, writing to a file, reading the file decoding, and
displaying. Tvtime grabs a frame, some filtering then displays.
No encode and decode keeping the system busy.

Never saw this until I tried .12. Saw it dozens of times then
never again after reverting back to .11.

I'm using 2.4.24 with Gerd's kraxel patches. At one time I'd
tired one of his daily snapshots because it looked like there
were changes to stuff relating to resets. This still had the
problem so that's when I went back to .11.
