I think it all depends on the amount of physical RAM one has in
relation to the amount of RAM required by the applications one runs
and to the types of I/O performed by said applications.  One argument
for swap even in the presence of large amounts of physical RAM is that
VFS caching to the extent that it causes some unused parts of
applications to page out can be a net positive to performance.

However, I can tell you anecdotally that all of my machines perform
strictly better without swap than with it, given my usage
patterns. YMMV.
