I run my frontend and backend as root - both of them create high priority 
threads on my system when they're actually doing something (run top and 
then press H to see all the threads).  When I did try running the frontend 
as non-root I found the performance pretty bad and gave up since I didn't 
see any big advantage.

You could set the SUID flag on the binary, or use SUDO.
