A follow up:  The problem disappears when disabling mp3 encoding.  capturing 
raw audio works fine.  This system is Fedora Core 1 using Axel's RPMs.  I'll 
do some more debugging later to see if I can figure out what is wrong with 
the mp3 encoding.
