Didn't see this crop up on the list, but I guess it will later.  I didn't 
really think about the option you suggested as things won't get blown away 
from $prefix/etc/mythtv and it is another standard way of doing it used by 
gazillions.  I have no idea if it is LSB compliant though.  The fallback 
where everything gets over written is $prefix/share/mythtv.  My intention was 
to move a couple of things out of there and still keep them global.  In my 
case it was mysql.txt which I wanted global as I didn't fancy making 
$HOME/.mythtv directories for each user and the other option 
"$prefix/share/mythtv" would have got blown up after the first upgrade.
