I think I've found the culprit in this problem.  I've switched to using 
/dev/dsp (an intel i8x0 / nForce onboard sound) as my sound input.  I 
was previously using /dev/dsp1, which was provided by the btaudio 
driver.  This doesn't make much sense to me why the input sound device 
affects the playback speed.  Still looking for a clue.

Now I just run at a standard 0.5-1s delay, which I assume is standard 
considering buffering and all.  Is that correct?
