While watching live TV, press "m" to bring up the EPG. With
the Alternate EPG the picture is still on screen.

Press "r" to mark something to record including recording
what you are currently watching. If you move to another
channel, pressing "m" again will change to that channel and
clear the EPG.

I also have a cable box where you can scroll the ODS and the
equivalent of the Alt EPG which puts more info on screen. I
think EPG is a better way to look around and since MythTV is
a recorder, you can even pause while you look for other
future programs.
