Although I dont remember exactly, I think I had a
similar problem and when reading back through the
messages from cpan, I got the idea to do this:

cpan> install XML::Parser

and that seemed to take care of whatever was causing
the complaints. Hope that helps

ps- now if only I could get the lirc_serial module to
load after recompiling a custom kernel, then I'd be happy
