Sounds like you might be having similar problems that I had with
Kmix.  At least the version in Mandrake 9 (KDE 3.0x), Kmix is broken
in that is doesn't set the mute and record settings correctly.

Try Alsamixer, set Line to full volume, muted, and record.  Its
what I have to do.  I don't have exactly the same symptoms as you,
but they are similar enough, together with KDE tells me you need to
check it at least.
