Re, audio quality, were you trying the analog or the digital mode? The analog
mode supports only mono, while the digital mode supports stereo.. 
I also have the SB Live!, is this the card you're having the rear speaker
problem with? There are utilities to reroute the sound on the board itself,
and technically you should be able to mute the line-in completely, while 
still reading from it to record.
