Debian 3.0 shipped with kernel 2.4.18 when it was first released, July 19th
2002.  The installation media boot a 2.2 kernel by default, unless a 2.4
kernel is requested from the syslinux prompt, in which case you get 2.4.18
from the beginning.  This is usually when people's eyes bug out and they
don't realize that 2.4 is available (because they press enter without
reading the screenful of instructions ;-)).  In either case, 2.4.18 can be
installed and used at any time after the installation.
