I have seen this once or twice but don't know enough about what  
determines buffer sizes to know what causes it.  I do get the  
"prebuffering pause" message from frontend.  I had also seen it  
occasionally before I made these changes, so it's probably best to  
debug it as a separate problem.  Unfortunately I've also never seen it  
with a prerecorded program so it's hard to reproduce for me.

Is this static thumbnail preview, or video preview?  I've tried both  
with HDTV and they work OK.

If you can get an exact backtrace of the crash that would be a big  
help.
