Are you using a similar sound card though?  I'm pretty sure that this is a
full-duplex type issue.  There is a useful hint in this thread about
checking whether it could be the OSS emulation which isn't working (thanks
for that).

I am about to try this out and see - the notes on the DIGI96/8 do note that
you are on your own if you try and use OSS rather than ALSA...
